The Incredible Highs

Our recent August reports from the Goodnews River read like a fishing fairy tale. Chrome-bright Coho salmon stacked in the lower river and Rainbows and Dollies throughout the system, beginners landing 20-30 fish daily, experienced anglers hitting 60+, and trophy rainbows averaging 20 inches with some genuine monsters pushing into the mid-20s and beyond. The weather was perfect – low-to-mid 60s during the day, clear nights in the 40s, and comfortable fishing conditions that had anglers in tank tops casting all day long.
The multi-species action was extraordinary. Our famous “Leopard Rainbows” were fat, healthy, and displaying the spectacular spots that earned their nickname. Dolly Varden were absolute monsters providing some of the week’s hardest fights. Combined with large Arctic grayling, it represented everything we love about Alaskan wilderness fishing at its absolute best.
As one recent guest perfectly captured it: “We’re all just soaking it in – the spectacular scenery, the acrobatic Coho, and the sheer joy of being on a river this wild.”
The Harsh Reality
But here’s what happened next, and why every Alaska angler needs to pay attention:

Within days of this incredible fishing report, Southwest Alaska weather changed dramatically. What had been perfect flying conditions turned into something no float plane pilot could safely navigate. Visibility dropped, winds picked up, and for several consecutive days, aircraft simply couldn’t reach the river systems. A scheduled trip that should have been experiencing this Coho bonanza instead found themselves weathered out, unable to access the fishing they’d traveled thousands of miles to experience.
Fortunately, conditions have since improved. Recent rains have brought the river’s water level back up, and fresh reports from the river show that those silver salmon which had been staged in the lower river are now moving upriver and stacking in the sloughs. We’re able to wrap up the season finale on a high note after all!
The Trip Insurance Wake-Up Call
This weather shift serves as the perfect reminder of why trip insurance isn’t just recommended for Alaska adventures – it’s absolutely essential. Alaska’s wilderness operates on its own schedule, and Mother Nature doesn’t care about your vacation days, connecting flights, or non-refundable deposits.
When you book a remote Alaska fishing adventure, you’re not just investing in a trip – you’re making a significant financial commitment. Between flights, accommodations, gear, and the trip itself, most guests have invested $7,000 to $15,000 or more in their Alaska adventure. Without proper protection, weather delays, medical emergencies, or other unforeseen circumstances can turn your dream trip into a financial nightmare.
Our Partnership with Global Rescue

This is exactly why Alaska Rainbow Adventures partners with Global Rescue to offer what we believe are the world’s leading travel protection services. When you’re fishing in remote areas accessible only by float plane, you’re not just dealing with potential trip cancellations – you’re in wilderness areas where emergency evacuation could easily cost over $100,000 without proper coverage.
Global Rescue provides:
- 24/7/365 advisory services with experienced medical professionals
- True field rescue from the point of illness or injury
- Medical evacuation to your hospital of choice
- Security evacuation from natural disasters or other emergencies
- No limitations on your activities
Beyond emergency services, IMG Signature Travel Insurance provides broader coverage against unforeseen expenses, protecting the full value of your trip investment.
The Alaska Adventure Reality
The Goodnews River is fishing better than ever, and our 2026 dates are booking at an unprecedented pace. What was once Alaska’s best-kept secret is becoming a must-fish destination for serious anglers worldwide. But with limited access and the realities of Alaska weather, availability is extremely limited.
If you want to experience the Goodnews bonanza for yourself, book now – but do it right. Protect your investment with proper trip insurance. Don’t be the angler who loses thousands because they thought “it won’t happen to me.”
Moving Forward

The incredible fishing we experienced earlier in August is still happening. The Coho are still stacked, the rainbows are still fat and healthy, and the adventure of a lifetime is still waiting. But Alaska will always be Alaska – wild, unpredictable, and operating on its own terms.
When you book your 2026 Goodnews River adventure, you’re not just securing dates – you’re investing in the fishing trip of a lifetime. Protect that investment properly, and you’ll be able to focus on what really matters: those moments when a chrome-bright Coho explodes on your fly, when a trophy rainbow bends your rod double, and when you realize you’re fishing in one of the last truly wild places on Earth.
