I spent 20 years fly fishing all over Alaska when I was a helicopter mechanic in the bush. I drove by or flew over the Goodnews many times. I always wanted to float it with a fly rod but only stopped briefly to catch grayling a couple times. I had a friend float it and he told me it was amazing.
Your friend was right: the Goodnews River is a spectacular river system that offers exceptional fishing opportunities for all five species of Pacific Salmon, as well as Dolly Varden/Char and resident species like Rainbow Trout and Grayling. Located in one of the most scenic areas of Alaska, the Goodnews River features three forks—two of which are navigable for Alaska Rainbow Adventures—providing various options for a float trip with us.
Saltwater fishing is my new obsession The variety of fish you can catch is amazing! Do you prefer saltwater or freshwater fishing?
Some of us have done significant saltwater fishing for fun or commercial work here in Alaska. But what we do at Alaska Rainbow Adventures is not just about fishing. It’s an adventure, a passion project grown out of a desire to share the Alaska experience with others in a way few get to see, let alone experience. We offer multi-day wilderness float trips where the people and everything on the trip get flown via float-equipped aircraft into the headwaters lake of the river; we will spend the next seven to ten days floating, fishing, and camping, embarking on an exciting journey through the Alaskan wilderness.
Just upgraded my rod and reel, and it’s made a world of difference It’s amazing how the right gear can enhance your fishing experience What’s your must-have equipment?
Rods:
Salmon: A 8-10 weight fly rod is ideal for targeting salmon species
Trout: A 6-7 weight fly rod is perfect for catching trout species like Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, and Arctic Grayling.
Reels:
Opt for a large arbor reel with a good drag system to handle the powerful runs of salmon and large trout.
